Karabau Petroleum LLP is a Kazakhstan oil refining and production of oil products company and one of the top oil refineries of the Republic. The refinery was put into operation in 2020 and is focused on processing of oil raw materials of West Siberian oil fields.
Karabau Petroleum produces a wide range of oil products. Among them motor petrol of various brands, diesel fuel, oil fuel (mazout), hydrocarbon liquefied gases, vacuum gas oil, technical sulfur, bitumen of several grades (construction, road, roofing), petroleum coke.
The enterprise has well-developed Utilities & Offsite facilities: commodity and raw feed tank farms, liquefied gases tank farm, loading and unloading racks for oil products transportation by rail and road transport.

Refinery structure
The structure of the refinery
The structure of the refinery includes a Complex of Crude Oil Primary Distillation (LK-6U), a Complex of Compounding and Oil Products Dispatch, a Complex of Crude Oil Advanced Processing (a fuel complex — KT-1 for deep processing of fuel oil), and a Complex of Heavy Oil Residue Processing which includes several process units.
Complex of Crude Oil Primary Distillation
The head of the process chain, separating crude oil into straight-run fractions that feed every downstream unit. Revamped during the upgrading project.
Complex of Compounding and Oil Products Dispatch
Blending of finished commercial grades to required specifications and dispatch of products to the tank farm and loading facilities.
Complex of Crude Oil Advanced Processing
A fuel complex — KT-1 for deep processing of fuel oil, increasing conversion depth and the yield of light, high-value products. Revamped as part of the upgrading project.
Complex of Heavy Oil Residue Processing
Includes several process units such as: Delayed Coking Unit, Coke Calcination Unit, Bitumen Production Unit, Sulfur Recovery Unit and Sulfur Granulation Unit.
Supporting units and infrastructure
Hydrogen Production Unit
Supplies hydrogen for hydrotreating and upgrading processes, supporting the production of low-sulphur, high-quality fuels.
Oil Sludge Processing Unit
Processing of oil sludge streams as part of the refinery's environmental and resource-efficiency programme.
Water Supply and Sewerage Plant
A large auxiliary unit providing water supply and sewerage services for normal operation of the whole refinery complex.
Central Refinery Laboratory
Central laboratory carrying out quality control of raw materials, intermediate streams and finished commercial products.
Upgrading project
New units commissioned in December 2020
As a result of the upgrading project implementation, two new complexes of process units were built and commissioned in December 2020 at the Refinery: the Isomerization and Naphtha Splitter unit and the Complex of Sulfur Recovery Units.
Isomerization and Naphtha Splitter Unit
A new process complex that upgrades light naphtha streams into high-octane components, strengthening the refinery's ability to produce modern, high-quality motor gasoline.
Complex of Sulfur Recovery Units
A new complex that recovers sulfur from process gas streams, significantly reducing emissions while producing technical sulfur — a granulated, marketable by-product.
Revamped existing production capacities

- Complex of Crude Oil Advanced Processing
- Delayed Coking Unit
All these measures ensured the production of K-4 motor fuels: diesel and gasoline of RON-92 and RON-95 in accordance with the requirements of the Technical Regulations of the Customs Union.

Karabau Petroleum has moved from initial commissioning to a full-conversion refining complex with modern ecological fuel production in a short period.

December 2020
Upgrading project completed
Two new complexes of process units were built and commissioned: the Isomerization and Naphtha Splitter unit and the Complex of Sulfur Recovery Units. The 12 new U&O facilities were built, and existing production capacities — primary distillation, advanced processing and the delayed coking unit — were revamped.

Result
K-4 motor fuels to Customs Union regulations
Production of diesel and gasoline of RON-92 and RON-95 in accordance with the requirements of the Technical Regulations of the Customs Union.

K4 / K5 ecological classes & three-year cycle
Ensuring production of motor fuels corresponding to ecological classes K4 and K5 in the amount necessary for the country's needs, increasing the technical resource of the refinery, and its output for a three-year inter-repair cycle.
